If you’re looking for a non-committal way to add color to tween room walls consider removable wall decals or a graphic, hand-painted wall design like the one pictured here. When your tween outgrows the space simply peel off the wall decal or paint over the wall design.

A GUIDE TO PERSONALIZED TEEN ROOM DECOR

A Guide to Personalized Teen Room Decor

By Janet B Gellerman

During the early to mid-teen years, children are beginning to grow and develop their own personal identity and a desire to revamp a private living space is likely to strike. Just as adults enjoy decorating after certain milestones such as a recent marriage or a new baby, a teen may be celebrating an event like the beginning of middle school or high school or an inner discovery.

However, this isn’t a time to stress over costs and hard work, it’s a time to for a family to celebrate and embark on this next step toward maturity. Whether you’re an adult wanting to manage and help decorate a teen’s room, or a teen yourself, this five-step guide will help make the process of developing unique teen decor a more enjoyable and easier process.

Communication is Key

The process of creating new teen room decor takes effort from both the adult and the teenager. It is just as important that the teen is able to voice his or her opinions and artistic ideas for the new space as it is for the adult to voice concerns about color, furnishing and whether it complements the scheme of the rest of the home.

Compromise

Possibly the most important part of any new decoration process is the planning stage. Instead of just sitting down and starting to plan which could result in arguments, slowing down the process and putting a damper in the mood, try creating an outline of everything that will need to be discussed such as functionality, color, theme and accessories, then separately make lists of what you have in mind. After regrouping, establish a budget then go over each item on the list, remembering that compromise in necessary.

Functionality Comes First

Some of the more important items to come to an agreement on are the necessities like teen bedding, desks and window treatments. There are many options to discuss such as loft versus castle bedding and whether the customization of window treatments is a possibility. These are the important furnishings that will most likely diminish the majority of the budget and establish a feel for the rest of the room – so try to get this knocked out first.

Small Changes Make a Big Impact

After establishing the teen decor necessities, it’s time to stretch what is left of the budget to its full potential. An easy way to make a room look completely different and add a unique spin is with a new coat of paint. When testing colors, try acting as a home decorator and get several samples of not only paint colors, but rugs, curtains and teen bedding designs. Then, practice holding them up to the walls, floor and windows as an interior designer would to see what looks best and complements the room as well as personal taste and style. This is a fun way to help minimize impulse decisions.

Accessorize for Personality

From wall stickers and murals to fun pillows and funky bean chairs, accessories are an inexpensive way to turn a bland room into a dream space that can be enjoyed alone or with friends. Accessorizing is a fun part of creating unique teen room decor and more inexpensive products allow for experimentation with creativity and personality.
